BASF and Philips develop roof transparent solar light

In the research and development of OLED (organic light emitting diode) technologies, BASF and Philips have made breakthroughs in the joint research and successfully integrated the products into the car roof.

According to NetEase’s understanding from BASF, this OLED light is transparent when it is closed, and passengers can take a look at the scenery outside the vehicle; when the light is turned on, they only cast light into the car. The OLED lighting solution for the roof is the result of long-term cooperation between BASF and Philips in the R&D of OLED modules.

NetEase Finance has learned that this OLED transparent sandwich panel structure can be used in conjunction with the same transparent solar cells.

Dr. Felix G?rth, head of the organic light-emitting diodes and organic photovoltaics division of BASF New Business LLC, said: "In this way, during the day, solar cells will give the driver a unique sense of transparency while generating electricity. At night, High-efficiency OLED lamps provide soft, warm lighting in the car."

Dietrich Bertram, General Manager of OLED lighting at Philips added: “This project not only confirms the endless possibilities of OLED, but also fully demonstrates the great potential of Philips Lumiblade OLED technology in creating innovative lighting applications and improving the quality of life.”

Since 2006, BASF and Philips have maintained close cooperation in the OLED 2015 project initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). OLEDs developed and produced by Philips use BASF's organic chemistry materials including dyes.
