Abdominal rehydration therapy for piglet diarrhea

The season transition period is the high incidence of piglet diarrhea. Because the newborn piglets are small in size, weak in constitution, lack of digestive function, poor ability to keep out cold, and various adverse factors can induce bacterial and viral diarrhea.

1 incidence

On February 21, 2011, an acute diarrhea occurred in a piglet in a pig farm in Pinggui Management District, Hezhou City, Guangxi Province. The owner treated ciprofloxacin and gentamicin on two litters of piglets, and the pig died more than half after 2 days. To this end, the Shatian Town Fishery and Veterinary Station sent technicians to the site for diagnosis, and the piglets were treated with abdominal fluid rehydration therapy. All the sick piglets recovered after 3 days.

2 clinical symptoms

The pigs are depressed and piled up in the pig pen, discharging the foul-smelling slurry-like dung, severe dehydration, pale eyes and progressive weight loss.

3 operation and treatment

3.1 The affected pig is kept by the reverse method, that is, the technician raises both hind legs of the piglet with both hands, so that the two forelimbs are off the ground.

3.2 Select the injection site, usually in the front of the pubic bone 3-6cm abdominal white line side (that is, 2cm outside the second pair of piglets), local hair cutting disinfection.

3.3 Wait for the piglet to stop struggling, the injector presses the injection site to the left hand, and holds the syringe in the right. With a normal injection needle (12-18, length 4-7cm), the needle and the skin are required to penetrate the abdominal cavity 2-3cm vertically, and the needle is felt. There is activity and no conflict. When the piston is pumped without gas and liquid, the liquid can be slowly injected. After the injection of the drug solution is completed, the surgical department is disinfected and the piglets are placed back in the circle.

3.4 Rehydration: (1) Prescription 1: 150 mL of normal saline, 100 mL of 5% glucose, 30 mL of 5% sodium bicarbonate, and 800,000 IU of penicillin. Once a day, once every 3 days; (2) prescription 2: 5% glucose 200mL, 5% sodium bicarbonate 30mL, tetracycline 100,000 IU, vitamin C 10mL. Once a day, use 2d. The above prescriptions may be added to the rehydration solution such as quinoloxacin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, kanamycin and the like according to the actual condition of the pig.

4 considerations

4.1 Whether the method of Baoding is correct or not determines the key to the successful implementation of rehydration.

4.2 Rehydration concentration should not be too high, stimulating drugs should be banned.

4.3 The depth of the needle is accurate. If it is too deep, it will easily damage the organs such as the intestines, causing peritoneal infection. According to the penetration of the needle and the inflow of the liquid, it can be judged whether the acupuncture is accurate. During the infusion process, observe the reaction of the pig. And the bolus injection is slow and fast.

4.4 Rehydration equipment must be strictly disinfected. The injection site can be sterilized with 5% iodine before and after each injection.

4.5 should be used with caution in patients with severe circulatory dysfunction.

4.6 The liquid should generally be close to body temperature, especially in the cold winter and spring season. When injecting a large amount of liquid, the liquid should be heated to about 38oC.

5 clinical indications

5.1 acute, mass-borne diseases, rapid efficacy, short time, easy to rescue. Such as poisoning, piglet diarrhea dehydration.

5.2 Acute fever dehydration requires fluid replacement and physical cooling in the body, such as heat stroke.

5.3 body temperature is reduced, need to replenish and physical warmth in the body, such as piglet cold.

6 summary

Rehydration therapy is an effective measure to rescue the acute risk of animals. Especially when the water, electrolytes and Acid-base balance of the animal body are disordered, it is necessary to replenish the fluid in time to eliminate or alleviate a series of symptoms caused by it. In clinical treatment, intravenous injection is generally used, which is the fastest. However, since the pig's ear vein is small, the needle insertion operation is inconvenient, and the rehydration time is too long. Therefore, the abdominal fluid rehydration therapy is used in clinical treatment, and the effect is very good. Livestock and poultry industry
