The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs released the "World Economic Situation and Outlook 2017 Mid-year Update Report" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 16th. The global economy is expected to grow by 2.7% in 2017 and 2.9% in 2018.
The report pointed out that the world economic development has improved in the past six months, in line with expectations, but growth in many regions is still lower than the need to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) quickly. Many developed economies and transition economies (Economies in transition) lead the global economic recovery, and East Asia and South Asia remain the most dynamic regions in the world. However, the economic recovery in South America is lower than expected, and economic growth in some parts of Africa has stagnated or declined. According to the report, world industrial production and global trade have temporarily recovered, mainly due to the increase in import demand in East Asia.
Diana Alarcon, head of the Global Economic Monitoring Center of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said that the current global economic growth is uneven, and the development prospects of some of the least developed regions are not optimistic. She said that the growth prospects of some large developed countries and transition countries are more optimistic. The economic and employment growth in East and Southeast Asia continues to grow, but the growth in many regions is weak enough to help them achieve their sustainable development goals.
According to the report, if income inequality is not alleviated, according to the current situation, nearly 35% of the population in the least developed countries will be extremely poor by 2030. These countries need to take measures to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor and the inequality of opportunities to solve the problem of poverty. The report proposes a combination of long-term and short-term policy recommendations: to provide subsidies to the poorest people in the short-term to support their consumption, and to increase the popularity of the medical security system and strengthen education and infrastructure construction in the long run.
The report also pointed out that global carbon dioxide emissions have remained flat for three consecutive years, indicating that green energy has been used more globally, energy efficiency has also improved, and that economic growth has slowed in some major carbon-emitting countries.
