Hong Kong Daily: Gansu Zhangye banned genetically modified products

How to treat genetically modified foods, the attitude of the world is different, the scientific community also has great differences, perhaps this kind of dispute will continue for a long time. Xinhua News Agency issued a new work by Jiang Yue

A remote ban in Zhangye City, Gansu Province, has issued a ban on the ban on genetically modified foods, products and technologies. Hong Kong media said that this is a rare move by local governments.

According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post reported on November 12, according to the government's new regulations, all genetically modified seeds, from cotton to papaya, must not be produced or sold in an area with a population of approximately 1.2 million. The attitude of Zhangye City is particularly noteworthy because Beijing has already approved the cultivation of a dozen genetically modified crops.

According to the report, due to the pressure caused by the rapid increase in food consumption, Beijing has used the media to promote public understanding and recognition of genetically modified technology.

Scientists criticized the ban on Zhangye City as "illegal" and caused the "ignorance" of basic scientific knowledge. However, many environmentalists praised the city’s bold move and called on other cities to follow suit.

Chen Kegong, Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee of Zhangye City, claimed that genetically modified food is a kind of biological weapon that “does not fend off the enemy’s soldiers” – this view has always been supported by certain hawks. The policy of Zhangye City is to ensure food security and “national renewal”. .

Huang Daxuan, an expert from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, proposed different opinions on this approach. He said: "The State Council has never granted local governments the power to independently choose genetically modified products. Local governments must respect and obey Beijing's orders."

He said Zhangye City is the main production center for corn seeds. The government's ban may be to protect local industries. Once Beijing has approved genetically modified corn products developed by mainland scientists, the traditional seed industry may be hit hard because GM producers claim that their products are resistant to disease and therefore require fewer pesticides and lower costs.

However, the report pointed out that Zhangye’s position has also won the sympathy of many people who have been skeptical about genetically modified foods. Beijing still prohibits genetically modified rice and wheat.

Zhang Jing, head of Greenpeace's food and agricultural project, agreed with Zhangye City's move. She said: "Each area has unique traditional resources and must be protected against the invasion of genetically modified species."
